The year 2026 marks 20 years since Smartrak was founded in New Zealand, beginning a journey that has seen the business evolve from a niche family-owned technology provider into a trusted fleet and safety management partner supporting organisations across Australian and New Zealand.
Over two decades, Smartrak has continuously adapted to changing technologies, customer needs, and regulatory environments - while staying focused on a simple goal: helping organisations operate safer, smarter, and more sustainable fleets.
Smartrak was founded in March 2006 by Alan and Sue Herbert. In its early years, the business worked closely with customers in sectors such as construction and security, helping organisations gain greater visibility, accountability and control over vehicles and assets.
What started as a focused technology solution quickly revealed a broader opportunity. Organisations weren’t just looking for individual tools - they needed integrated systems that connected vehicles, people and safety in a more holistic way.
As the original founders approached retirement, Smartrak entered its next phase of growth. In 2017, the business joined Volaris Group (a Constellation Software company), marking a new chapter focused on long-term investment, sustainable growth, and continued innovation - while retaining its independence and customer-first approach.
This transition provided the stability and support needed to continue evolving the platform without losing sight of Smartrak's core purpose or values.

While the technology has changed significantly over the past 20 years, some defining themes have remained consistent:
One of the most significant milestones was the acquisition of PoolCar in 2019. This expanded Smartrak’s capabilities in shared mobility and pool vehicle management, strengthening its ability to support secure, efficient vehicle booking and access for government, healthcare and enterprise fleets.
In more recent years, Smartrak has also played a growing role in supporting fleet electrification, helping organisations plan, transition and manage electric vehicles alongside traditional fleets - within a single, integrated system.
This work has been shaped in close collaboration with customers already well progressed in their EV journeys, allowing Smartrak to anticipate and respond to the practical challenges fleets encounter as electrification scales.
Troy O'Connor, former CEO of Smartrak and current CEO of Omegro (Smartrak's parent) looks back.

“From the start, Smartrak’s focus was empowering organisations to realise the value from better visibility and control of their assets. It’s been rewarding to see that foundation carried through to today, even as the platform, business, and customer base has grown.
Smartrak has stayed true to solving practical problems for customers, and that’s what has allowed it to keep evolving in a meaningful way.”

Several team members have been with Smartrak for more than a decade, providing continuity, deep customer understanding, and long-term product knowledge. This stability has played an important role in maintaining strong customer relationships, and ensuring the platform continues to reflect real-world operational needs.

“From the very beginning, Smartrak was built on relationships. What’s always stood out to me is the commitment within the business.
We’ve had people stay for many years, building deep knowledge and genuine connections with customers. That continuity has been a big part of what makes Smartrak what it is today.”
Peter Grant, former CEO of Smartrak and Chief of Staff at Omegro
Looking Ahead – the Next 20 Years
As fleets face increasing pressure around safety, costs, emissions and accountability, Smartrak remains focused on helping customers adapt with confidence.
The next chapter will continue to build on Smartrak's strengths:

“Our focus hasn’t changed, it’s still about helping customers operate safer and more efficiently, but the environment they’re operating in has become far more complex.
Whether it’s electrification, compliance, or cost pressures, fleets need better visibility and smarter tools to make decisions. That’s where Smartrak is continuing to invest - so our customers can move forward with clarity, and conviction.”
Current CEO, Casey Molloy
