What is RUC (Road User Charges)?

RUC, or Road User Charges, is a system in New Zealand that ensures all road users contribute to the maintenance of the country's road infrastructure.. All vehicles that run on a fuel that does not have an excise at the pump (e.g. diesel), or weigh more than 3.5 tonnes, are subject to road user charges (RUC). However, if a vehicle is working off-road, a RUC Refund can be claimed.

Are electric vehicles (EVs) exempt from paying Road User Charges?

No. Since electric vehicles do not pay an excise for petrol, they are obligated to buy a RUC license to display on the windscreen. The RUC rate for light EVs is $76 per 1000km. The RUC rate for PHEVs is $53 per 1000km, plus an admin fee.

Does Smartrak's RUC management solution support electric vehicles (EVs)?

Yes. Our RUC management solution is designed to handle mixed fleets with ease. Whether you have diesel, petrol, hybrid, or electric vehicles, the system provides a unified platform to manage RUC obligations across all vehicle types.

Can I claim rebates for off-road travel?

Yes. By integrating the data from your vehicle's GPS tracking devices, our system automatically calculate the rebate due for each vehicle, and pre-populate the required NZTA form.

Do all of Smartrak's telematics devices support RUC management?

Smartrak's RUC solution is currently only avaliable for vehcles that are tracked with Smartrak's AVL devices. OBD-II devices are not currently supported by RUC.

What happens if I get audited?

Our system has reports available to export if reporting on a RUC claim is requested by NZTA officer, or internal management.

What happens if I exceed my RUC license kms?

If a vehicle exceeds its RUC license mileage, it is considered non-compliant, which can result in fines or penalties. Our system prevents this by sending timely alerts when a license is about to expire, ensuring you renew it in advance and avoid disruptions.
